Tregs Protect and Repair Infected Tissues

Researchers from the DQBM Joller Lab describe regulatory T cells as dynamic mediators of both immune control and tissue recovery. Their functions adapt to the affected organ, pathogen and stage of infection, allowing them to limit damaging inflammation while supporting regeneration.

The review examines viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections and highlights tissue-protective mechanisms involving growth factors, cytokines and interactions with immune and stromal cells. It also explores how the checkpoint molecules TIM-3 and TIGIT may support repair functions beyond immune suppression. These insights could inform therapies that preserve tissue protection without weakening pathogen clearance.
