BraTS-Africa Advances Inclusive Medical AI

The BraTS-Africa Challenge brought African patient data into international efforts to develop AI for glioma segmentation. Researchers curated multiparametric MRI scans from 115 adults treated at seven imaging centres in Nigeria and invited teams to identify three tumour subregions.

The DQBM Menze Lab contributed to the challenge’s conception and organisation. Between 2023 and 2024, leading methods improved their segmentation accuracy and boundary detection, demonstrating the value of region-specific datasets. The initiative supports more inclusive benchmarking while highlighting persistent inequalities in computing resources and participation. Future expansion across African countries could strengthen clinically relevant AI tools for resource-limited settings.
