Consensus Statement on Digital Twins in Medicine

Researchers from the Department of Quantitative Biomedicine (Krauthammer Lab) co-authored a consensus statement on digital twin technology in healthcare, published in npj Digital Medicine. Using expert workshops, patient focus groups, and a representative Swiss survey, the team explored future scenarios for AI-driven patient replicas that support prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy.
Findings show that 62% of Swiss respondents are interested in having a digital twin, but 87% oppose mandatory use. Trust is highest in public hospitals and universities, while skepticism remains toward private tech and pharmaceutical companies. The study’s 12 recommendations emphasize voluntary adoption, patient control over data, and state-led infrastructure.
